For the third time in just one week, a sex toy was thrown onto a WNBA court — this time during the Indiana Fever vs. Los Angeles Sparks game at Crypto.com Arena. Late in the second quarter, a lime-green sex toy landed near Fever guard Sophie Cunningham while Kelsey Plum was shooting a free throw. Cunningham jumped back in visible surprise, and Plum swiftly kicked the object off the court.
Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts condemned the act, calling it “ridiculous, dumb, stupid, and also dangerous,” emphasizing that safety, respect, and professionalism must be upheld in women’s basketball. Cunningham later posted online, writing, “This did not age well,” referencing earlier comments where she pleaded with fans to stop throwing such objects, warning they could seriously injure a player.
This marks the third such incident in a week, following similar stunts during games between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream, and the Chicago Sky vs. Golden State Valkyries. In other cities like Phoenix and New York, fans also attempted to toss sex toys, though none landed on the court. One fan in Georgia has already been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing, and public indecency.
The WNBA issued a strong statement affirming its zero-tolerance policy: any fan throwing objects will face immediate ejection, a minimum one-year ban, and potential legal action. While early incidents were met with humor, growing concern among players and league officials has turned the trend into a serious safety issue that can no longer be ignored.
